The Future As It Happened

Recently we were contacted by Wired U.K. to develop some icons for a special section they were running that featured thoughts and letters from the future. Featuring writers like Cory Doctorow, Margaret Atwood, and Marcus du Sautoy, a professor of mathematics at The University of Oxford, how could we say no? Wired contacted Angel Bomb after seeing our new logo on a design blog and wanted icons in the same vein; minimalist, futuristic and cool. Seeing them in the magazine as well as animated in their award winning app is quite an honor. We'd love to do more illustrations for pubs. C'mon, bring it!

Design In 7 Video

Recently, Todd was asked to give a seven minute talk by the University of Minnesota's College of Design where he studied to become a graphic designer. He spoke along with six other design professionals about how they got to where they are and shared stories from their careers. Todd's career path has been an unusual and very non-linear one and said, "I think it's helped me to grow not only as a designer, but as a person. I chose to speak about this, to inspire students to try new things and experience different viewpoints. One of the coolest things was that I received an illustration of myself created for the event by the talented Max Lindorfer." Check out the video here, it's only 7 minutes.

Art-A-Whirl 2014 Fri–Sun, May 16–18

Blood. Sweat. Tears. Design. Printing. Dreams.

Art-A-Whirl is an annual demonstration of the heart poured into a community by local creatives; creatives that believe in the power of art and design to promote social and economic growth, celebrate and reflect the community, and create connections between individuals, businesses, and artists. Through creative interpretation, problem solving, and risk taking, we are makers of dreams. Both ours and yours.

If you believe in hard work, ingenuity, authenticity, and the persistence of pursuing dreams, join us at Art-A-Whirl.

With a plethora of stories to be told, show your support for your neighbors and learn how their goods and services came to be. Support their endeavors and commission them to help support yours.

“Multiple studies have shown that each dollar spent at local, independent businesses on average generates at least three times more direct local economic benefit as a dollar spent at absentee-owned formula businesses.”

American Manifesto Update

Since we've released American Manifesto, time has flown by and we've been bombarded with an overwhelmingly positive response. We'd like to extend a wholehearted thank you to everyone involved. It's been such an amazing experience to see the conversations that have spurred as a result of people either purchasing or interacting with the book.

The launch party was hosted in conjunction with an AIGA Minnesota Cocktails with Creatives event with around 100 guests. Shortly after, Todd was invited to discuss American Manifesto during the morning show on local radio station, AM 950. You can listen to the segment below. We've been sending out copies to politicians and public figures while continuing to seek out opportunities for new press coverage to continue the dispersal of his message encouraging social change. The end goal is for the Manifesto to serve as both a starting point and fuel to a larger conversation that needs to happen regarding current American policies.

At the launch party, book sales were high and there were fantastic, engaging conversations among guests regarding both the content and the design and production of the book. Following the radio spot, we also had a wave of inquiries and sales. The book is drawing attention from the creative community as well as the general progressive public.

If you'd like to view the book in more detail, we have posted the book under our design portfolio, which you can check out here. We still have copies of American Manifesto for sale, which you can purchase in person during our studio hours or you can buy it online!

American Manifesto Launch

Now we’ve done it. Todd’s pissed and is doing something about it.

Angel Bomb proudly announces the launch of American Manifesto, Todd Thyberg’s second publication made possible through a 2013 Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.

Nearly 250 years after the distribution of Thomas Paine’s history-altering pamphlet, Common Sense, we release American Manifesto. With a tip of the hat to printers and activists of the past, this pamphlet calls the United States citizens to action on a number of current national concerns. Our country’s health, leadership, and environment, to name a few, are on a rather sharp decline and we the people must do our part or be held accountable.

Join us on March 6 from 6-9pm
for a launch party in conjunction with
AIGA Minnesota’s Cocktails with Creatives

Minnesota Center for Book Arts
Located in the Open Book Building
1011 Washington Ave S, Minneapolis

Directions

Come discuss, celebrate and enjoy this handcrafted, vintage letterpress printed work of art complete with modern design and illustration straight from the Angel Bomb studio.

The 12-page pamphlet, American Manifesto, was printed on 100% cotton Crane Lettra Pearl White and bound in Cordenons So…Wool Red Tartan. Typefaces used were Solano, Gotham, and Kaine. This 3-color book was letterpressed on a Heidelberg 10×15 Windmill at Angel Bomb in Minneapolis, MN.

“If America really is the best country on earth…why do so many of our people go hungry? Why do our leaders consistently work for corporate interests rather than individuals’ rights? How can our leaders, the media, and we the public still be ignorant to the factual reality of climate change? Why can someone go to prison for a minor drug offense while the people who brought our economy to its knees still receive bonuses? Why are we still taking off our shoes to fly? How can 2/3 of America’s population be overweight when people here and around the world are going hungry? How is it acceptable to make fuel from food? Why don’t we Americans question policies?”

Angel Bomb is now accepting pre-orders.

In the spirit of the pamphlet, we would like the information in American Manifesto to be easily accessible to all. Pre-order your copies for only $25 by emailing info@angelbomb.com or pick ‘em up at the launch party on March 6th.

Todd Thyberg is a fiscal year 2013 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
