A timely zombie-apocalypse story that uses political allegory to examine the rise of extremism in contemporary America. The narrator and his small band of survivors—including a gay couple targeted for who they are—hide from violent "infected" who have succumbed to a plague of fear, propaganda, and rage. As the infected hunt marginalized communities and destroy the infrastructure of civilization, the survivors face a fundamental question: what does it mean to remain human when inaction makes you complicit in atrocity?

The story explores moral compromise, the erosion of democratic norms, and the impossible position of those trying to maintain their humanity amid organized brutality.

This idea has been in my head for a while, and I began working on it in earnest in the spring of 2025. It was painful to research and immerse myself in this topic, yet I couldn’t stop; it felt too urgent. When Minneapolis was invaded by masked federal agents terrorizing our citizens in December, this story became all too real. While I was finishing this work at an artist residency at Penland School of Craft in January of 2026, Alex Pretti was murdered. I couldn’t keep up with how fast reality was outpacing my story.

This is what happens when the rule of law is based on lies, racism, and the quest to remain in power.
