“Once upon a midnight dreary . . .”

THE RAVEN

Few poems in the English language have captured the imagination of readers quite like Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven.” For nearly two hundred years, this tale of loss, grief, and the slow descent into madness has inspired countless interpretations, but none as striking as this fine-press edition.

Angel Bomb is pleased to announce this extraordinary new edition of “The Raven.” Letterpress-printed with original three-color illustrations by Todd Thyberg, the book will be issued in two editions—a deluxe edition of fifty case-bound copies which come in a clamshell box as well as a chapbook edition of two hundred sewn copies.

Poe’s narrator has always been draped in shadow—a grieving man alone at midnight, undone by a bird and a solitary word. This lovely illustrated edition asks questions the poem itself never answers: Who is this narrator and what happened to his love, Lenore?

Todd Thyberg’s illustrations give the narrator a history for the first time; visual clues embedded throughout the book build toward an answer revealed only on the final page. Look closely. The evidence is there from the first illustration onward, for the collector willing to observe as carefully as the narrator himself is forced to.

The edition closes with a brief afterword by the artist, reflecting on his own connection to Poe and to this remarkable poem.
